A few kilometres inland from the coastal town of Payyoli, on the road towards Maniyur, stands the Keezhur (Kizhur) Maha Siva Temple, known to local people simply as Kizhur Ambalam. Shiva is worshipped here under the name Vathilkappavar, the guardian of the door, and the temple is unusual in several ways. The deity is not a carved stone lingam but is installed on a tall wooden pillar, the mani thoonu, facing west; the main door of the sanctum is kept shut, and devotees take darshan through a small opening at its right side, the same one the priests use.
The temple also has an oracle, a velichappad, which is rare for a Shiva shrine and rarer still because the office is held by a Namboothiri. Its annual festival in the last days of Vrischikam ends with an arattu procession and a fireworks display called the Poovedi, for which the temple is widely known in the Vadakara–Koyilandy belt. The temple is run under the Malabar Devaswom Board.
Tradition traces the temple to the Kaippurath tharavad. Its karanavar, the head of the family, used to walk to the Muchukunnu Kotta Shiva temple near Koyilandy for his daily worship. When he grew old, a day of heavy rain made the journey impossible, and that night, it is said, the Lord's presence appeared as a flame on a wooden pillar in his house. The sanctum built around that pillar is said to have shut its own door when the flame was lit, and the door has stayed closed ever since, which is why Shiva here is Vathilkappavar, the one who guards the door. Devotees still debate whether the presence on the pillar is Shiva alone or another deity besides.
The temple is said to be mentioned in Logan's Malabar Manual, and keeps two curious gifts from the days of European trade on this coast: a large wooden lamp stand said to have been presented by British sailors and a right-spiralled conch from the Dutch. In the twentieth century the temple fell into neglect, worsened by the land reforms that took away its estates. In 1971, after efforts led by the Gandhian K. Kelappan, a Kizhur Siva Kshetra Paripalana Samithi under V. V. Subrahmaniya Iyer took over from the hereditary trustees; administration passed to the HR&CE department in 1974 and later to the Malabar Devaswom Board. Renovations followed in 1978, 1988, 1995 and 2015, the Vishu pattu and Valiya kalam pattu were revived in 1999 after fifty years, and the sanctum roof was fully replaced in 2020. A board of four appointed trustees and one hereditary trustee now runs the temple.

Traditional, modest clothing is customary in Malabar temples: a mundu or veshti for men, a saree, set-mundu or churidar for women. Men are usually expected to remove their shirts inside. Follow the temple's current notices.
Entry customs follow the temple's tradition; please follow the notices at the temple. Darshan is through the small opening beside the closed sanctum door, so be patient in the queue; a full circumambulation of the sanctum is permitted here, unlike at most Shiva temples.
The five festival days at the end of Vrischikam (mid-December) are the busiest, above all the arattu day and the Poovedi fireworks at night. Saturdays and Sundays are considered special, and the Mandalam season (November–December) brings a steady flow of devotees for Niramala. On other days, mornings are calm.
